Under the surface at Petersham Pool

In the final days before Petersham Pool, aka Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre, closes for the colder months I have been taking photos below the surface where the light creates beautiful shapes, refractions and reflections. As I swim along it’s as if I am looking through a kaleidoscope!

Swimming with Peter, the porpoise of Petersham Pool

“Last day,” says Peter when I join him in the water at the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre, aka Petersham Pool. “Are you going to miss it?” “Yes,” says Peter, who swims every morning and talks to everyone who comes to the pool. “Look at it, it’s beautiful,” he says, as he pushes under the water and[…]

The end of summer holidays at Petersham Pool

Last week when I paused at the end of a lap, I noticed three of the morning regulars scanning the pool for a spot. There were swimming lessons in lanes one and two with children pushing and gliding or doing torpedoes as it’s called today and learning to breathe in and bubble out. The rest[…]

Locals party at opening of new Petersham Pool

Petersham marked the re-opening of the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre yesterday with a big pool party. The celebrations started with a traditional smoking ceremony from indigenous elder Aunty Jenny, who led a trail of kids in cossies around the centre’s new 25-metre pool, toddler’s pool and water play area. Aunty Jenny’s ‘welcome to country’ was followed[…]

Marrickville Council makes decision on Petersham Pool

At the 17 April Marrickville Council meeting, a decision was made on the future of the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre aka Petersham Pool. The good news is that there will continue to be a pool in Petersham Park. At the meeting it was resolved to tender the works, closing the pool over the 2012-13 season (depending[…]

The future of Petersham’s Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre

Petersham Pool closed yesterday for winter. We now wait to see what its future will be. Will it be redeveloped into a 25-metre, 8 lane pool?  Will it continue as it is or will it close forever? Most of the locals who swim regularly at the patched-up, 49-year-old pool would like to see it remain as[…]

Petersham Pool re-opens for the summer season

As local Insey informed me, Petersham Pool (Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre) re-opened last weekend. It appears that the redevelopment that was meant to be carried out over winter has been postponed. A life guard at the pool said Marrickville Council has put the plans back a year. So for all us locals who are quite fond[…]

The last days of Petersham Pool

All the regulars were at Petersham Pool this morning. Many of them were having their last swim before it closes on Sunday. They were also enjoying the pool in its original state, possibly for the last time. While plans are not yet approved, it is envisaged that over winter Marrickville Council will redevelop the nearly 50-year-old[…]

An Australia Day dip at Petersham Pool

A morning dip at our local pool was a nice way to start Australia Day. In the water I met the very tanned Joe, appropriately attired for a swim on 26 January. It’s a pretty relaxed place – Petersham Park Pool or I should say the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre as it is officially called. It was[…]
