My Swimming Pool Stories newsletter on Substack
In July 2025 I launched Swimming Pool Stories newsletter on Substack which takes readers on a deep dive into the world of swimming pools – profiles, reflections, books, art, images, history, design and anecdotes.
In the first edition I wrote about my experience at the winter solstice swim at Sydney’s Wylie’s Baths. I also featured a radio program on a key figure in the development of freestyle, and a wonderful book called Swimming Studies recently re-released and reviewed by none other than author Ann Patchett.
Each month I’ll be digging up some personal images from the past and in July I shared a photo of the pool at the El Dorado Motel in Surfers Paradise I found in a box of my mother’s slides from her honeymoon in 1958. I love discovering art with a pool theme and in the first newsletter I highlighted an exhibition of paintings inspired by the classic 1968 movie, The Swimmer.
