A short poem on swimming styles at Leichhardt Pool

On the balcony at Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre I watch the bodies lapping up and down and observe the different swimming styles. That girl’s head is too high and that man’s is way too low. If only the woman in the pink cap would reach out further and if she straightened her legs she’d glide[…]

Anzac Day tranquility at Leichhardt Pool

On Anzac Day there was a soft Autumn light over Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre. The late afternoon sun glistened and sparkled in the blue water of the 50-metre pool. When I started taking photos, a lifeguard asked me what was so interesting in the pool. “There’s all these beautiful reflections,” I said. Oh,” he said, sounding unconvinced of[…]

Underwater with Narelle Autio, Persephone and me

A favourite game among my friends back in the 1970s at Northbridge Baths was to dare each other to dive under the suspended starting blocks and come up the other side. The bottom of the blocks was often covered in moss, so it was bit like venturing into a dark, slightly disorientating world. I was always[…]

Video records Leichhardt aquatic history

To celebrate the 50th birthday of  Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre (LPAC) in December 2010, Amie Zar, Leichhardt Library’s local history librarian produced a video on the pool. The short film showcases photos of the pool over the past half century, and images from the municipality’s original Tidal Baths (1905-1959). The early baths were located just below the current pool on[…]

A perfect spot for a Sunday swim

Relaxing on the deck at Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre (LPAC) is a nice way to spend an hour or so on a sunny Sunday like today.  It’s even nicer with coffee and cake from the complex’s Blu Aqua Kiosk after 20 or 30 laps up and down the 50-metre pool.

Blue skies and cumulus clouds over Leichhardt Pool

It was nice to see the sun return today after quite a few days of heavy rain.  Wet weather doesn’t stop me heading to the pool as I love swimming in the rain. I particularly like the outdoor Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre (LPAC) when it’s raining as it’s usually a nice temperature in the water. The[…]

Winter swimming at Leichhardt Pool

Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre (LPAC) in Sydney’s inner west is my pool. Since I moved to the area 20 years ago, it has been my lap swimming spot.  While it’s very popular in summer, my favourite time is in the colder months when only the regulars brave the outdoor 50-metre pool. Heated to 27 degrees, in the[…]

A lifetime connection with pools

For as long as I can remember I have had a fascination with swimming pools. Whenever I am near one I have a terrible urge to dive in. After I have been in one, I have trouble tearing myself away from the comforting, womb-like, liquidy space. As a child I spent hours poring over the[…]
