Saluting lifelong swimmer and trailblazing woman,

Saluting lifelong swimmer and trailblazing woman, Susan Ryan being farewelled today in a State Funeral at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Waiting for my coffee at my local @thepapas_table in Petersham this morning, I spotted an obituary in The Sydney Morning Herald of trailblazing Australian woman and Labor politician Susan Ryan. As I read about her life and her long list of achievements working for equality for women in particular and all Australians, I remembered reading that she loved swimming. It started when she was a small child in beachside Maroubra and continued throughout her life. In fact that was what she was doing when she took ill on 25 September - swimming in Coogee’s Ross Jones Memorial Pool.

Watching her State Funeral this morning, her son Ben said that when he returned to Australia from his home overseas, the thing his mother and he most looked forward to was to go down to Coogee for a swim.

So as a tribute to Susan, the first woman to serve in an ALP cabinet, a person of wit, humour, determination and commitment to social justice and human rights, I’ve posted a photo of three women enjoying a swim at her final swimming spot at Coogee.

Avalon Rock Pool painted by artist Herbert Badham

Avalon Rock Pool painted by artist Herbert Badham in the 1940s, which I discovered on the inside cover of a book called Remembering Avalon: Growing up in the 1940s and 50s, a group memoir edited by Jan Roberts at the Airbnb we stayed at two weeks ago.

Herbert Badham (1899-1961) was a realist painter who studied at the Julian Ashton School of Art in Sydney’s The Rocks. He focused on painting scenes of everyday life including another pool painting I discovered at a @statelibrarynsw exhibition of the Parsley Bay Swimming Enclosure at Vaucluse.

Magic! Bryan Brown and Yusra Metwally, two legends from back to back chapters in The Memory Pool meet at Marrickville’s @addiroad

It was a privilege to interview both of them and hear their childhood memories of swimming at two western Sydney pools - Bankstown Baths for Bryan and Greenacre Pool for Yusra. Sadly as Yusra points out both pools are no longer operating but their stories live on in the pages of The Memory Pool: Australian stories of summer, sun and swimming.
